Probationary Period

 

SHRA Employees

Individuals receiving initial appointments to permanent positions must serve a probationary period. The probationary period is an extension of the selection process and provides the time the new employee needs to achieve performance at or above the expectations of the job or to be separated if performance does not meet acceptable standards. Individuals who are returning to ECU into a permanent position after a separation shall also serve a probationary period. The probationary period shall be 12 months of either full-time or part-time employment from the actual date of employment or reemployment. Periods of extended leave of absence with or without pay do not suspend or increase the duration of the probationary period beyond 12 months. Extended leave is defined as leave in excess of one-half of the regularly scheduled workdays and holidays in the month.

 

CSS Employees

The probationary period is an extension of the selection process and provides the time for effective adjustment of the new employee or elimination of those whose performance does not meet acceptable standards. All new Clinical Support Services (CSS) employees, including rehires and transfers from SHRA or DMSS positions (both internal ECU SHRA hires, as well as those from other State agencies), will serve a 12-month probationary period. The University retains the right to discharge new CSS employees during the initial 12-month probationary period, without notice or without cause. Probationary dismissals are not subject to appeal. Any vacation and sick leave time may only be used in accordance with applicable leave policies. Probationary employees with more than 3 occurrences of unscheduled absence may be subject to termination. Employees who resign or are terminated during the initial 12-month probationary period, or during the applicable extension period, are not eligible to be paid accrued vacation leave or legislative vacation bonus leave.

 

DMSS Employees

All new Dental Medicine Support Services (DMSS) employees, including rehires and transfers from SHRA or CSS positions (both internal ECU SHRA hires, as well as those from other State agencies), will serve a 12-month probationary period. The University retains the right to discharge new DMSS employees during the initial 12-month probationary period, without notice or without cause. Probationary dismissals are not subject to appeal. EHRA Non-Faculty, EHRA Faculty, & Temporary

EHRA Non-Faculty, EHRA Faculty, and temporary employees (SHRA, CSS, DMSS, & EHRA) are not subject to a probationary period.
